When I was a 6th grader I remember sprinting down my driveway from the bus. I couldn’t wait to spend my evening “playing God” on what seemed to be the most miraculous game ever, The Sims. Although I most likely didn’t gain much from the experience, besides damaged retina from staring at the glow of the computer screen, times have took a turn. While skimming through edgalaxy.com, I found a blog that seemed too good to be true. The newest edition of Sims, SimCity 2013, to be released in March will be a designed towards the student. The game itself will be equipped to promote interest in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
What I believe to be the most exciting part of this new game is SimCity EDU. A non-profit called GlassLab is developing SimCity EDU as an online community for teachers to collaborate. On this website, said to launch around the same time as SimCity, educators will be able to create and share lesson plans for SimCity 2013 that follow Common Core standards. Children love computer games, so I think this type of collaboration is exactly what the modern classroom needs.
